Self-awareness is an important component of self-leadership and to understand self-awareness, we need to first understand what awareness is about.

While awareness means to be conscious of what is going on around us, self-awareness is about being aware of who we are, what is important to us, our strengths, weaknesses and the reason of our actions and behaviors while we are aware of the effect of our interaction with others.

Back in the 90´s, American psychologists Peter Salovey and John Mayer developed and launched the EQ concept, most known as Emotional Intelligence, which is the ability to understand and manage emotions. EQ became a relevant component of self-awareness as well.

We go through changes every day.

Challenges, new experiences and new acquired knowledge have an impact in the way we think and feel. It is not strange at all that already the very next day, we are a slightly different version of ourselves. We change, we evolve.

Self-awareness checks help us to understand ourselves better and the transitions we go through, but most of all, these helps us to find internal clarity and connection to the core essence of our purpose and the source of who we are.

One of the most beneficial routines we can create is to book time to spend with ourselves to have a moment of reflection to keep our self-awareness synchronized. The schedule should be chosen and adapted accordingly to our own needs.

Below you will find some powerful questions you can start your first self-awareness check:

  • How does your life look like RIGHT NOW?
  • What do you think about this RIGHT NOW?
  • What do you feel about this RIGHT NOW?
  • What do you appreciate the most in your relationship / interaction with others?
  • Which activity makes your heart sing? How often do you practice it? What can you do to do more of this?
  • How do you want it to be if everything was possible?
  • What and when do you want to achieve this goal? When you achieve it, what does this mean for you?
  • What kind of resources do you need?
  • What are you going to do NOW, to achieve that?
  • What will be your next step?

Remember that you can always add more insightful questions that are relevant for you to follow up your self-awareness in the direction that is meaningful for you.

This quick and powerful routine will become the guiding star of one of the most exciting and rewarding projects you have been leading so far:  your own journey.
